Welcome to Long's Gardens

Welcome to Long’s Gardens! We are a third generation, family owned and operated iris farm in the middle of Boulder, Colorado. We were founded in 1905 by J.D.Long. Today the business is carried on by Catherine Long Gates, grand-daughter of J.D., and her husband, Dennis Gates.

For more on our history, see About us. We specialize in bearded iris, which we sell both as dig it yourself and by mail order catalog. Operating an agricultural enterprise in the middle of a city makes for some interesting challenges, but also provides an opportunity for people to slow down, take a break, and relax (take a virtual tour at Beyond the Bloom). Come see and smell the iris and enjoy a bit of historical Boulder. We’re open to the public when the iris are in bloom, May through early June. Please check back often for updates.

Long's Shorts

We are open for the 2017 season now from April 29 through June 11, every day from 9-5.

Our 2017 catalog is now posted on our website. The photos have been updated as well.

The bloom came on very early this year with TB stalks up in late April. Nature presented an additonal challenge for us with snow and two nights with temperatures in the 20s on April 28 & 29.

Most of the blossoms have been frozen. It  appears that there may be a few scattered TBs that may bloom. There are a few stalks coming up in the dwarf & intermediate iris as well. The plants are hardy and will be fine.

Thank you for your support. Please check back for updates.

It's sunny today and a great time to dig up some iris for your garden!

Bolder Boulder, a Tall Bearded iris available to dig in our digging field. Bolder Boulder tends to rebloom here, hence the alliterative name, also named to celebrate Boulder's upcoming race. This iris bloom, like all our TB bloom, was frozen this year but next year should put on a good show for you.

We have photo signs in the digging field so, even if the bloom is gone or damaged, you can see what the flower should look like.
